Get Shredded: Our New HQ Gym

Roberts Recycling Unveils Sustainable Gym with Innovative Footwear Flooring

At Roberts Recycling, we’re always looking for innovative ways to give waste a second life. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our new staff gym, featuring a durable, shock-absorbent floor made from shredded, end-of-life footwear.

This eco-friendly flooring is the latest addition to our Purpose Driven Products™ range, demonstrating how non-rewearable textiles and footwear can be repurposed into high-quality, functional solutions rather than being sent to landfill or incineration.

From Waste to Workout: A Circular Solution

When planning our new HQ gym, we wanted to make it as sustainable as possible. This led us to develop a recycled flooring solution, created from shredded single shoes, odd pairs, and damaged footwear that would otherwise have no further use.

By transforming these materials into a high-quality, long-lasting gym surface, we’re reducing landfill waste while proving that circular economy principles can be applied to everyday materials. With its shock-absorbent and durable properties, this flooring solution is not only a great fit for our own gym but could also be explored as a sustainable flooring option for gyms, sports facilities, and other commercial spaces.

Paul Roberts, Director of Roberts Recycling, spoke about the significance of this project:

“This flooring is a prime example of how waste materials can be repurposed into something practical and long-lasting. By finding new applications for end-of-life products, we’re not just reducing landfill waste—we’re also exploring innovative circular solutions that could be scaled for other industries.”

A Positive Investment in Staff Wellbeing

While sustainability was a driving force behind this project, the gym is also a significant investment in staff health and wellbeing. Having an on-site gym allows our team to fit exercise into their daily routine, whether that’s a pre-work session, a lunchtime break, or winding down after a shift.

Regular physical activity has been shown to improve mental health, focus, and overall wellbeing, and we’re already seeing the positive impact on team morale and productivity.

Paul Roberts continued:

“Investing in a gym for our team is about more than just fitness—it’s about creating a positive working culture. Regular exercise has huge benefits for mental health, energy levels, and team morale. We’re proud to provide a space where our staff can stay active, de-stress, and look after their wellbeing—all while standing on a flooring solution that embodies our commitment to sustainability.”

At Roberts Recycling, we continue to push the boundaries of waste recovery and product innovation. If your business is looking for sustainable flooring solutions or wants to explore how end-of-life textiles and footwear can be repurposed, we’d love to hear from you.
