Stay Cozy and Sustainable This December: DIY Draught Excluder

At Roberts Recycling, we’re all about blending creativity with sustainability. That’s why we’re thrilled to continue our Makers Monday series—your weekly dose of DIY inspiration that’s kind to the planet. This week, we’re tackling the winter chill with a project that’s both practical and eco-friendly: a DIY Draught Excluder.

Why Make a Draught Excluder?

Draught excluders are a simple way to keep your home warm by blocking cold air from sneaking in under doors. Not only do they save energy, but they also help reduce heating bills—making them a win for both your wallet and the environment!

What You’ll Need

The best part of this project? You can make it using items you already have at home or can easily source second-hand. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Fabric: Use leftover fabric, old clothes, or even pillowcases.
  • Filling: Opt for sustainable materials like old socks, fabric scraps, or dried beans.
  • Sewing Supplies: A needle, thread, or sewing machine. Don’t have one? Fabric glue works, too!
  • Decorative Touches (Optional): Add buttons, ribbons, or embroidery to personalize your excluder.

How to Make Your Draught Excluder

  1. Choose and Prepare Your Fabric
Select a fabric that’s long enough to cover the width of your door. If you’re repurposing old clothing, cut it into a rectangular shape.
  2. Sew or Glue the Edges
Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the design side facing inward. Sew or glue along the long edge and one short edge, leaving one end open.
  3. Fill It Up
Turn the fabric right-side out and stuff it with your chosen filling. Pack it tightly to ensure it blocks drafts effectively.
  4. Seal the Open End
Sew or glue the open edge closed. If you’re feeling fancy, add decorative touches to match your home decor.

Why DIY Is the Way to Go

Making your own draught excluder is more than just a craft project—it’s a step toward sustainability. By reusing fabric and avoiding store-bought options, you’re reducing waste and giving old materials a new lease on life. Plus, it’s a fun, creative way to stay cozy this winter.
