Textile Transformations

Community, Creativity & Sustainability in Action

At Roberts Recycling, we believe in the power of textile reuse to create positive social impact. That’s why we’re proud to support Textile Transformations, an inspiring project led by Make CIC, helping Knowsley residents develop new creative skills while tackling textile waste.

Funded by Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA), the programme has provided free creative workshops to the community, offering a space for people to learn, connect, and upcycle. Through our donation of unwanted textiles, participants have been able to reimagine materials, turning them into unique fashion pieces, costumes, and furniture restorations.

Creativity Meets Sustainability

Participants had the opportunity to work with expert practitioners, including:
🔹 Pyromancy Productions CIC – Specialising in costume crafting and theatrical design
🔹 Buy By Bethan – Focused on innovative upcycled fashion
🔹 Sustainable Starts CIC – Supporting furniture restoration and sustainable crafts

By repurposing discarded fabrics, the project not only diverted waste from landfill but also equipped participants with valuable life skills in sewing, design, and restoration. Many attendees were people facing social isolation, and Textile Transformations provided a welcoming, hands-on environment where they could build confidence, gain creative skills, and connect with others.

Celebrating the Journey

The project culminates in a special exhibition on 28th February at Make on the Corner in Huyton Village, showcasing the incredible work created throughout the programme. The exhibition will highlight the talent, dedication, and creativity of participants while reinforcing the importance of finding new uses for textiles through upcycling and reuse.

Paul Roberts, Director of Roberts Recycling, emphasised the importance of initiatives like this:

“We’re committed to supporting projects that extend the life of textiles while creating opportunities for people to develop new skills. The success of Textile Transformations shows that sustainability isn’t just about recycling—it’s about empowering communities to engage with reuse in a way that’s meaningful and practical.”

A Lasting Impact

Textile Transformations is more than a project—it’s an example of how textile reuse can be a catalyst for social, environmental, and economic change. By providing materials and supporting initiatives like this, we hope to inspire more creative approaches to sustainability while helping communities thrive through skills-building and social connection.
